music of the year

here is the list of all my favourite music from 2016.  in summary it's my usual mix of melancholy french music and pulsating scandinavian pop!

there has been some fantastic music, some disappointments, some music i've appreciated but not fallen for and lots of e.p.s.

please get in touch if you have anything to recommend to me-
i feel like there must be some great french music that has passed me by!

so, in no particular order...

music of the year

LALEH - KRISTALLER
a mix of english and swedish language songs. she co-wrote adam lamberts 'welcome to the show' but her solo version on here is far superior. if the title track had a video i'd have posted that but instead i'll post the song which first grabbed my attention (love singing along 'BA! BA!)

Labels:

music of the year

TOVE LO - LADY WOOD
the word "fuck" in every track, great songwriting, honest, taking pop music to another level.
and she found time to masturbate on film(!)

Labels:

music of the year

CHARLOTTE RAMPLING - LES GRAINS DE SABLE
released in 2010 but only discovered by me this time last year - this album is probably my most played album of the year. wonderful on every level, every song is great. her speaking/singing captures everything i imagine her to be like. i cannot recommend this enough

Labels:

music of the year

MEDINA - WE SURVIVE
the queen of danish gloom-pop returned triumphantly, this time with an english language album (as opposed to her usual danish release followed up by an english version). it's a shame she seemed to get sidetracked after one single release. this meant the best song 'liquid courage' never got the chance to become a huge hit (gaga would kill for this song).

Labels:

music of the year

MARIE AMELIE SEIGNER - M.A.S.  e.p.
she just snuck in at the end of the year - it's been a long wait since her last album from 2010 and this e.p.carries on exactly where that left off. there's been no change in style or sound - just reassuringly wonderful

Labels:

music of the year

FIREFOX AK - A NEW SHAPE e.p.
this is everything really good scandinavian pop should be - bubbling electro synths, hypnotic loops, interesting lyrics, steel drums (a nod to the knife surely?). a welcome return after a 5 year absence. and 'heart of mine' has been played a lot in my house/car/phone

RAPHAELE LANNADERE - L
her previous album (initiale) is a classic. this album wasn't quite as good as i was anticipating but there are still some excellent songs on here and definitely worth checking out.
her voice is gorgeous too.
